What is Etsy?

Etsy is an online marketplace where people around the world come together to buy and sell unique handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies. Etsy has been around since 2005 and is now one of the most popular e-commerce websites in the world.

Sellers create their own stores on Etsy to showcase their products and buyers can browse through millions of listings to find just the right item. Etsy offers a platform for both buyers and sellers to connect and create transactions that are secure and efficient. Etsy also provides support and resources to help sellers run successful businesses.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect one-of-a-kind gift or you want to start selling your own handmade creations, Etsy is the place to be! So now we know what Etsy is, let’s get into who can sell on Etsy and how to start an Etsy shop.

Who Can Sell on Etsy?

Anyone with a product to sell can open an Etsy shop. Whether you’re a crafter, maker, artist, designer, collector or hobbyist, you’re welcome to join Etsy’s marketplace and start selling your creations. Etsy does not allow sellers to resell items, so all products must be handmade, vintage (at least 20 years old) or craft supplies.

Etsy also offers business services for its sellers in the form of direct checkout, shipping labels and payment processing. These services allow you to easily manage your sales from your shop’s dashboard. However, these services are only available in certain countries. To check if you are eligible for these services, visit Etsy’s Terms of Service page.

It’s important to note that even if you’re eligible to sell on Etsy, you still need to adhere to Etsy’s policies. For example, any images of items you post must accurately represent the item you are selling. This means that you should avoid using stock photos or images that do not accurately reflect what you are selling. If you want to read more about Etsy’s policies, please check out their Help Center.

If you are thinking about starting an Etsy shop, it is important to understand the fees associated with selling on the platform. Etsy charges a fee for every listing and a fee for every sale that you make.

How Much Are The Seller Fees on Etsy?

The listing fee for an item is currently $0.20 USD per item listed. This fee is charged when you first list the item, regardless of whether the item sells or not. The listing fee is automatically deducted from your bank account each time you list an item.

Etsy also charges a 6.5% transaction fee on all items sold through their platform. This means that, when you make a sale, 6.5% of the total amount will be taken out as a transaction fee.

In addition to these two fees, Etsy may also charge extra fees for additional services like shipping labels, payment processing fees and currency conversion fees.

Etsy also charges extra fees if you want to run promotions on their platform, such as offering discounts or free shipping. These fees are typically based on a percentage of the sale amount and vary depending on the promotion.

Understanding the fees associated with selling on Etsy is key to making sure your shop is profitable. By taking into account these costs when setting your prices, you can ensure that your Etsy shop is successful and profitable. We suggest reviewing Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy. How to Find The Best Name for Your Etsy Shop?

When it comes to how to set up an Etsy shop, one of the most important things you need to decide on is the name of your shop. Your shop name will be the first thing people see when they visit your shop, and it’s also the name you’ll use when marketing your shop on social media and other platforms.

Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect name for your Etsy shop:

1. Brainstorm Ideas – Start by brainstorming some potential names for your shop. Think about words that relate to the type of items you sell, or words that capture the theme or aesthetic of your shop. You can also look up synonyms for words related to your product and mix them together to create unique names.
2. Check Availability – Once you’ve narrowed down your list of potential shop names, check to make sure they’re available. You don’t want to choose a name that’s already taken, or too close to another seller’s shop name. The best way to do this is to search for the name on Etsy itself.Once you have found your perfect shop name, we suggest not only checking name availability on Etsy but also doing your due diligence through Google search. This will ensure that no other businesses outside Etsy are selling similar products with a similar name. You can also undergo a trademark check for US businesses through TESS. This is particularly important as you never know if you will want to open your own shop in the future and re-branding can be expensive.
3. Make It Memorable – Your shop name should be easy to remember and spell. If it’s too complicated or hard to pronounce, people won’t be able to remember it. Finding the perfect shop name for your Etsy shop doesn’t have to be difficult with Shopify’s free business name generator.
4. Use Keywords – Adding keywords related to your products in your shop name can help you appear in relevant search results. For example, if you’re selling handmade jewelry, include words like “jewelry”, “handmade”, or “accessories” in your shop name.
5. Keep It Short – Try to keep your shop name as short as possible without sacrificing memorability or meaning. Short names are easier for customers to remember and type into their search bar.

With these tips, you can create a unique and memorable name for your business that customers will love.

Things to Prepare Before Getting Started

To get started, individuals looking to start an Etsy shop should prepare the following.

1. Shop tagline/slogan to add under the shop name – which helps people understand what they can find on your shop.

2. Short about description – write your story, about the shop, production process, about the products, etc. This is added to the about the shop page – this section is located under the products section.
3. Make a list of categories to organize the products.
4. Products names and descriptions (recommended to make keyword research for SEO)
5. Prepare product photos: Use Quality Photos: The product photos you use on your shop page can make or break a sale. Make sure your product photos are high quality, show off the details of the product, and accurately reflect the colors of the items.
6. Short text for the Announcement section (located below the shop header/above the products section) – this is optional but can add value for buyers – shop owners can add coupon codes or different announcements.
7. Frequently asked questions for the “Frequently asked questions” section.
8. Privacy policy for the “Privacy policy” section
